Rowan's Cover Painting:
I have recently been working on Rowan’s painting to be included in the cover for A Light in the Dark, and I am very excited with how she is progressing.
There just are not enough hours in the day!
Once I have brought her up to the level of detail I want, I plan to combine her with the painting of Torrin below.
It is important to show both characters on the cover but in my initial study, I had them had standing together, and ultimately they needed to be apart in order to add foreshadowing for the story.
Work left to do:
I will be completing the details on her shoulder armor, but with an emphasis on the dark chiaroscuro, so the focus can stay on the golden light. The dark at the top will fade up into the dark of Torrin's portrait as he channels the power of the Great Winged One. I am excited to see how the two pantings combine to become the complete cover.
I am a photoshop dummy, using it for very basic editing, and I am only just beginning to scratch the surface of what is possible on an artistic level with digital art creation.
As a traditional artist, I find it far simpler and easier to pick up a pencil or a brush, and just use my analogue skills to create what I want. That may change as I learn more, but for now, I love using photoshop for editing images, expanding them so that titles fit or creating one image with several paintings.
Don't get me wrong, I will never put away my oil paints and brushes to create digitally. While I look forward to learning more about the possibilities, I adore traditional painting and drawing way too much to abandon it.
The Drawing:
As you can see the drawing for this scene is quite different from the painting. Part of why I wanted to create a oil version of it was to emphasis the light emanating from Rowan's chest.
I do love how this image turned out, its delicate and soft nature speaks to Rowan's inner focus as she calls on Guardian magic.
I plan to feature it on the cover of Vol 3 of the Companion Sketchbook.
